Gene fusions occur when two formally independent genes merge to create a new gene. These gene fusions also result in fusion proteins, proteins that may otherwise not be made by the cell. Gene fusions and their fusion proteins have been shown to play a role in the development of cancers, including pediatric brain cancers. Researchers will analyse the pediatric brain tumor RNAseq data for fusions, which may be possible therapy targets. A small cohort of the same tumors at Weill Cornell will be compared to data from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Atlas. By comparing data analysis from two sources, researchers can further verify their findings and possibly accelerate the development of therapies for pediatric brain cancers.
