Celebrating CBTN Women Behind the Science: Tatiana Patton

Posted on

The fight against pediatric brain tumors requires a dedicated army of researchers, clinicians, and support staff. That’s only half the story, however. Behind the scenes, unseen heroes empower these researchers to focus on science. This blog, part of our February Women in Science Month series to honor just a few of these invaluable people, shines a spotlight on Tatiana Patton, Director of Research Programs and Project Management at the Children's Brain Tumor Network (CBTN). Tatiana's work is a shining example of the powerful women driving scientific progress.

Tatiana's impact on CBTN has been significant. She has played a key role in developing the Pediatric Brain Tumor Atlas, a groundbreaking initiative that sequenced the tumors of over 5,000 children, unlocking invaluable genomic data. This data has paved the way for personalized medicine approaches and fueled further research advancements.

To deliver change for pediatric brain tumor patients, CBTN needed to accelerate discoveries by increasing the research scale. Thus, it launched a project management team to meet those goals. “With over 350 research projects supported across the global academic community and biopharma, we can see the success of Ms. Patton and her team," remarked Jena Lilly, CBTN Executive Director of Research Operations and Strategic Planning.

"Being able to be involved in the evolution of where we were and where we've come from has been motivating," Tatiana reflects. "Having leaders that just want to find cures for every child, every time, everywhere has been inspiring – and it reflects what we do every day."

Accelerating Research

While her title might suggest administrative duties, Tatiana's role extends far beyond that. She is a key collaborator, a problem-solver, and a driving force in translating research ideas into actionable projects.

"I think the biggest misconception of my role is that I'm a note-taker," Tatiana explains. "I'm involved in the launch of many initiatives within CBTN. I can also be seen as a partner, someone to lean on for background information and historical knowledge."

Like many of these professionals, Tatiana's work isn’t adequately measured by a time clock. "This field isn't just straight 9:00 to 5:00," she says, emphasizing the dynamic nature of her role. You're not doing the same thing every day." Her days are filled with a whirlwind of collaborative conversations, navigating complex research projects, and ensuring the smooth flow of information within the CBTN network.

She advises young women considering a career in healthcare or science to, "be open and innovative. This field requires a willingness to embrace change and find creative solutions to seemingly insurmountable obstacles.”

Fostering a Supportive Environment

CBTN actively fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment for women. With women leaders at all levels, from the Executive Board to the research teams, CBTN demonstrates a commitment to gender equality in science.

"CBTN is a place where women can come in and be seen as equals," Tatiana affirms.

A Message of Hope

For families facing the devastating diagnosis of pediatric brain cancer, Tatiana offers a message of hope and solidarity: "You're not alone. You have a community within us that's here rallying around you and supporting you."

Tatiana Patton's dedication and expertise are invaluable assets in facing the challenging journey of treating and curing pediatric brain tumors. Her work exemplifies the vital contributions of innovative women in all facets of scientific discovery and underscores the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all researchers.
