Mission

Why was Head for the Cure Foundation created?

Chris Anthony was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain tumor in October 2000 at the age of 34. An avid runner, Chris had the idea to start a run to raise money and awareness for brain cancer. After his passing, Chris’ family, led by brother Matt, took on the fight in his honor

The first Head for the Cure 5K event was held in the Kansas City metro area in October 2003 and raised aproximately $18,000. By 2007, this 5K event had raised approximately $150,000 and the Head for the Cure Foundation was formally established.

At each 5K, Head for the Cure partners with a local brain tumor clinic or advocacy organization to support their research and programs. The primary beneficiary of Head for the Cure is the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC). Housed within in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the BTTC is comprised of more than 30 of the top brain tumor centers across the country who work together on brain tumor clinical trials.

To date, more than $20 million has been raised to support our mission. Our 5K events continue to drive Head for the Cure’s fundraising to support clinical trials, research, and programs.

What are the goals of Head for the Cure Foundation?

We accomplish our mission by three strategic pillars:

1) Building Awareness for a disease that is not widely known and needs advancements in treatments to help patients

2) Raising Funds through 5K run/walk events and other fundraising events and campaigns to support clinical research and programs

3) Igniting Hope for all who have faced this disease.

What is the focus of Head for the Cure Foundation's efforts?

Our focus is both in research and support programs for patients, survivors, and caregivers. In our support of research and clinical trials, we can help the brain tumor community in the future while supporting patients and caregivers today through educational resources, advocacy opportunities, and connections with others impacted by brain cancer.

In what ways does Head for the Cure support the brain tumor community?

We support the brain tumor community through advocacy, education, research funding, family support, and collaboration.

Why does Head for the Cure Foundation support the CBTN?

As we enter our 20th year of supporting the brain tumor community, Head for the Cure is committed to focusing more of our time, energy, and funds raised to the fight against pediatric brain cancer. We are honored to work with the CBTN in their collaborative efforts across the entire brain tumor community.
