Childhood Cancer Awareness Month calls us to recognize the children and families facing cancer, and to ask whether awareness is leading to the progress they urgently need.
For me, that question is deeply personal. Sadly, my granddaughter Clara passed from a brain tumor when she was just six years old. Her example of courage in the face of suffering is why I’m determined to challenge a research system that’s moved too slowly for too many children.
Children with brain tumors need more from science than isolated studies and incremental advances. They need an approach built to accelerate discovery. A model that connects data, applies the power of artificial intelligence, advances safer and less toxic treatments, and brings the right people and resources together around this shared purpose.
That is the model Bridge To A Cure Foundation is helping to advance through the Children’s Brain Tumor Network (CBTN).
Connect Data and Put AI to Work
Pediatric brain tumors are extraordinarily complex, and the information needed to understand them is often scattered across institutions and studies. No single hospital holds enough data or expertise to answer every important scientific question.
CBTN addresses this challenge by connecting clinical data, imaging, biospecimens, research expertise, and advanced technology across a collaborative network. This gives researchers a more complete view of these diseases and the tools to examine diverse information at a scale and speed that isolated research cannot match.
By combining connected data with artificial intelligence, we can identify patterns, generate stronger insights, and pursue promising treatment strategies faster.
Pursue Treatments That Cure Without Causing Lasting Harm
Speed matters. But so does the kind of future we’re working to create.
For too long, children have received treatments that may attack their cancer while also causing serious, lifelong harm. Survival alone cannot remain the standard. We must pursue treatments that are more precise, more effective, and less toxic to children’s developing bodies and brains.
A cure should give a child the opportunity not only to survive, but to live fully.
Make Collaboration the Engine of Progress
No organization can accomplish this alone.
Progress depends on families willing to share data and samples, researchers sharing knowledge, institutions opening access to resources, foundations aligning their efforts, and donors providing the support required to move the work forward.
Collaboration is not an aspiration within this model. It is the engine.
Build From Progress in Pediatric Brain Tumors
Our first responsibility is clear: build a better future for children with brain tumors. They cannot afford to wait.
The model we develop through this work may also have implications far beyond it. Other complex and difficult-to-treat diseases face many of the same barriers: fragmented data, limited funding, and disconnected research. By proving what connected data, artificial intelligence, clinical insight, shared resources, and sustained collaboration can accomplish in pediatric brain tumor research, we can establish an approach that may ultimately help others confronting diseases still considered too rare or incurable.
This broader potential does not lessen the urgency of curing pediatric brain tumors. It underscores the importance of getting this work right.
